(wonders where Noel lives that summer lasts this long... and is a moving permit required to live in this area that is apparently snow-free...?)

Here is a chance to discuss religion with Richard Dawkins. This is from the BBC website: http://newsforums.bbc.co.uk/nol/thread.jspa?forumID=3891&edition=2&ttl=20071206063307

Ask 'The God Delusion' author Richard Dawkins

Our guest on the Have Your Say programme on Sunday 9 December will be Professor Richard Dawkins. He is an outspoken atheist who says science explains the world better than religion.

Pope Benedict has attacked atheism in his latest encyclical. He says it is responsible for some of the "greatest forms of cruelty and violations of justice" in history. He adds "man needs God, otherwise he remains without hope".

Professor Dawkins says "many of us saw religion as harmless nonsense ... September 11th 2001 changed all that. Revealed faith is not harmless nonsense, it can be lethally dangerous nonsense".

Did God invent man or did man invent God? Does religion stoke conflict or help to avoid it? Is it possible to have hope without belief? Does science provide more answers than religion? Is atheism a religion?

Professor Richard Dawkins will be our guest on the Have Your Say programme at 1406 GMT on Sunday 9 December. If you want to take part in the programme please leave your phone number with your comment.

Jeffinrr, I like your comments because it shows the type of global thinking so necessary in this modern world. I have been teaching a class in science literacy at one of the local universities and have tried to weave that concept into some of the class sessions. Knowledge of some of the fundamental principles of thermodynamics is a great place to bring such global thinking to the public. Sure I have an electric car or a gasohol car but what is the TOTAL energy budget including the process of obtaining the energy to run the car from electricity or some agricultural product that probably needs fertilizer from oil anyway. Good one.

It's interesting. A good idea for a couple that wants a lifestyle that includes spending 3 hours a day canoeing. It would be a little hard for a family with young kids at home for mom or dad to spend 3 hours a day commuting to work.

I think we need to take global warming seriously, and change the way we live accordingly. However, I also think we need to look for solutions that make sense and provide the best return on investment. Rather than spending 3 hours a day canoeing to work, this couple may actually save more energy by spending the extra time making their home more energy efficient, and using a hybrid to commute to work.

The cable show, “Living with Ed”, recently feature singer/songwriter Jackson Browne’s commitment to green living. He’s spent millions to make his ranch home completely energy self-sufficient. He saves thousands of kilowatts by generating his own energy. However, the same multi-million dollar investment made in an urban condo could help residents save hundreds of thousand kilowatts.

That's great! I'm going to share with all my coworkers. I just switched a 40+ minute commute for a sometimes-15 minute one and I'm sure happier for it. I've been toying with the idea of biking to work as well. Unfortunately, in my job, I often need the use of my car, but we'll see. Your editor is an inspiration!
